Coconut is one of the oldest crops grown in the tropic and subtropical area. The coconut is known for its great versatility as seen in the many domestic, commercial, and industrial uses of its different parts. Coconuts are part of the daily diet of many people. Its endosperm is initially in its nuclear phase suspended within the coconut water. The oil and milk derived from it are commonly used in cooking and frying; coconut oil is also widely used in soaps and cosmetics. Coconut based cropping/farming systems promote on farm diversity and strengthens ecological base of coconut farming. Coconut husk is the raw material for the coir industry. It is also used as a domestic fuel and as a fuel in copra kilns. Coconut oil comes under edible/industrial group, is used as cooking oil, hair oil, massage oil and industrial oil. It is dominated by saturated fats and high percentage of lauric acid. Coconut oil for edible purposes is now being claimed to be the second best edible oil in the world, after Olive oil. Coconut plays an important role in the economic, social and cultural activities of millions of people in our country. Coconut provides food, edible oil, industrial oil and health drink to humanity. All parts of coconut tree is useful in one way or other and the crop profoundly influences the socio economic security of millions of farm families.
What are the health benefits of coconut oil?
Studies have show that intake of coconut oil can help our bodies mount resistance to both viruses and bacteria that can cause illness. Even more, it also can help to fight off yeast, fungus and candida.
Coconut oil can also positively affect our hormones for thyroid and blood sugar control. People who take coconut oil also tend to have improvements in how they handle blood sugar since coconut can help improve insulin use within the body. Coconut oil can boost thyroid function helping to increase metabolism, energy and endurance. It increases digestion and helps to absorb fat-soluble vitamins.
Can coconut oil reduce cholesterol?
Coconut oil has a saturated fat called lauric acid, a type of MCT. It has been shown that lauric acid increases the good HDL cholesterol in the blood to help improve cholesterol ratio levels. Coconut oil lowers cholesterol by promoting its conversion to pregnenolone, a molecule that is a precursor to many of the hormones our bodies need. Coconut can help restore normal thyroid function. When the thyroid does not function optimally, it can contribute to higher levels of bad cholesterol.
Coconut oil is rich in magnesium, calcium and iron. But also the high content of Vitamin C must be referred to.
Magnesium has a positive effect on the water balance and a lack of this mineral may lead to water deposits in the body – a typical feature of the menopause.

99 % of the calcium in a body is contained in the bones and teeth – the compound rich in calcium, Hydroxylapatit (Ca5(PO4)3(OH)), renders the necessary stability and firmness. At the same time, the bones serve as storage for calcium – in case of lack of calcium this substance may partially be dissolved from the bones and made available for other tasks. The decalcification of bones, osteoporosis, is mostly common among elderly people. Within the cells calcium contributes to the stimulation of muscles and nerves, to the glycogen metabolism, to the cell division as well as to the activation of a number of enzymes.
Iron is one of the vital trace elements. As the body is unable to produce this substance itself, it must be taken in via nutrition. Most of the iron is needed for the formation of hemoglobin. The dye of the red blood cells is necessary to transport the oxygen from the lung to the organs and carbon dioxide back to the lung. In case of lack of iron, less hemoglobin is formed and the oxygen supply of the organs considerably deteriorates: one really feels tired, lacks in concentration and is very pale. In children, an insufficient supply with iron may also cause developmental disturbances.
